Today Key Stage 2 pupils had a very interesting and informative assembly about learning to play musical instruments and developing singing skills. We were very lucky to have ex-pupil Yasmin Coe (Mrs. Coe’s elder daughter) come in to talk about all of this and perform some of her original material.

As the children entered the hall, the video to Yasmin’s first ever single, “Nothing Better” (which Yasmin wrote when she was at Victoria Dock) was being played on the big screen. The children looked surprised and excited about what was going to happen, as they could see that there was someone different in the hall, and also they could see that there were microphones set up, along with an acoustic guitar! Mrs. Saunders said that the children were about to be treated to something very exciting, and Mrs. Coe welcomed Yasmin, who then answered lots of questions about learning to play musical instruments and how she first learnt many of them at Victoria Dock Primary School.

She then played a live version of her second single, “Leave and Let Go”. This was then followed by more questions, this time focusing on her singing, and she talked about being in the Victoria Dock School Choir and winning competitions at Cottingham Music Festival. She followed this by playing her third single, “Remember You”.

Yasmin then told the children all about how her love of music then led her to writing her own songs, recording her own singles, making music videos, recording a session for BBC Introducing, performing at The Freedom Festival and Humber Street Sesh, and being main support for The X-Factor’s Jake Quickenden at another festival. All this and Yasmin is still only 14! Yasmin is currently a pupil at Malet Lambert Secondary School.

The children then asked Yasmin a few questions, such as how she has made videos and what type of guitar she plays. Then the video for her brand new single, “Beginning of the End” was played. Mrs. Juggins came and thanked Yasmin for coming in, as did the children and Mrs. Juggins also reminisced about the time that Yasmin sang “Nothing Better” at Cober Hill. As the children were leaving the hall, Yasmin played them out with an acoustic version of “Nothing Better”. The whole assembly was very inspiring for the children, many of whom now want to learn a musical instrument!
