This part of the website contains the syllabus for the Victoria Dock Primary School Art Graduate Award.

You will need to study all the information presented here.

Staff will help you develop the study skills you need in order to memorize, retain and recall this information.

Once you are confident you can recall this syllabus tell your teacher and they will give you your undergraduate test.

Once you have passed you will receive a badge and be known as a Victoria Dock Primary School Art Graduate!

Going to Work: L S Lowry

(c. 1943)

After years of painting and exhibiting in and around Manchester and Salford, Lowry received his first one-man exhibition in London in 1939 and went on to national fame. He died aged 88 in 1976 just months before a retrospective exhibition opened at the Royal Academy.

Girl With Red Balloon: Banksy

(c. 2002-2018)

Girl With Balloon, also called Balloon Girl or Girl With A Balloon, was first created in London in 2002, and was originally stencilled on the walls under Waterloo Bridge at London’s Southbank.

Going to Work: L S Lowry

LS Lowry’s iconic painting ‘Going to Work,’ was commissioned in 1943 at the height of the Second World War by the War Artists Advisory Committee (WAAC).

Heavy industry was playing a crucial role in the war effort and the WAAC wanted to reflect that in their art collection.

Girl With Red Balloon: Banksy

Banksy’s message that “There Is Always Hope” has led him to create variations of Girl With Balloon addressing specific political issues. In 2014, he created a version featuring the girl wearing a headscarf, to support victims of the Syria conflict.

Two years later, the artist reworked the design to feature a Union Jack balloon, and offered a free print of it to Bristol locals who voted against the Conservative government.

  • Tasks to complete:

  • Answer 10 questions about the two artists.

  • BANKSY

  • Create a portfolio of some local street art – make reference to the Bank Side Gallery in Hull.

  • Create 2 pieces of street art. 1 in the style of Banksy and one in a different graffiti style.

  • LOWRY

  • Create a portfolio of some local scenery – your local area, city centre, shops etc.

  • Create 2 pieces of street art. 1 in the style of Lowry and then any type of landscape.

What is Graduate Award ?

Pupils who wish to become Graduates in the available study topics can elect to study at home and in school during their own time, taking the Graduate Test when they know they are ready.

Upon graduation, they will receive a badge which they can wear on their school uniform with pride.

This will further demonstrate to their peers, parents, visitors and the wider community just how dedicated they are to their studies.
